As He Finally Settles For ADC

After months of weighing his options and wide consultations on the political platform to achieve his presidential ambition, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has finally opted for the opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), dumping his former party, LP.
The former Anambra State governor announced his defection on Wednesday December 31, 2025, to the ADC leadership led by former Senate President David Mark and party faithful at an event held at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, Enugu State.
Obi said: “We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026, we will begin a rescue journey.
“We will resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027.”
Newsmata.com.ng recalls that Obi’s organic support nationwide had made a bold statement of his high electoral value garnering over six million votes in the 2023 presidential election contested on the LP platform.
Political observers believe that with Obi joining forces with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who similarly scored over six million votes as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) the ADC would give the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a tough electoral fight.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had won the keenly contested election with over eight million votes.
While Obi had prevaricated in dumping the LP, the uncertainty in the party with its many factions may have informed his decision to join the ADC. He had, in the process of consultations and negotiations, striven to get the commitment of the ADC to zone the presidential ticket to the South fearing that if left open, Atiku, a serial contestant with massive war chest, might pick the ticket. The commitment was however not forthcoming.
It could not be ascertained the conditions upon which he decided to take the plunge into the ADC coalition.
