President Bola Tinubu and members of the senate have condoled with Abba Moro, the senate minority leader, over the death of his son and a grandson.
The senator’s son, Victor, died in a motor accident along the Mararaba axis of Nasarawa state on October 19, barely 24 hours after the burial of his father’s grandson.
Victor had recently returned to Nigeria after completing his studies in Turkey to participate in the one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the sad news to lawmakers.
“Distinguished colleagues, we have an unfortunate situation where our minority leader lost two of his children under 48 hours,” Akpabio said.
“In fact, his son, who just graduated, died in a motor accident in the last few days, and the grandson also passed away through circumstances that are very tragic.
“He has not mandated us to discuss this, but I felt that being part and parcel of us, we should at least observe one minute’s silence for those two young Nigerians who died.
“In fact, the son was 28 years old when this accident occurred two days ago. He’s not here today, but I want to urge that from here, we have made available buses outside that we can go to his house and condole with him.”
The senate then observed a minute’s silence in honour of the deceased.
TINUBU SENDS MESSAGE OF COMFORT
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Tinubu extended condolences to Moro and his family.
The president described the incident as a painful tragedy and urged the family to find comfort in the memories of their departed loved ones.
“President Tinubu urges the family to find solace in the impactful lives of the children, whose time on earth, though short, is truly a blessing to the many lives they touched,” the statement reads.
The president prayed that God “will receive the souls of the departed children and comfort the family”.
‘A DEVASTATING REMINDER OF LIFE’S FRAGILITY’
In a separate condolence message, former Senate President David Mark described the loss as “a devastating reminder of life’s fragility”.
“I received the heartbreaking news with great shock and profound sadness,” Mark said in a statement signed by his spokesman, Paul Mumeh.
“The loss of a child is one of life’s heaviest blows, and I can only imagine the depth of grief that this tragedy has brought upon the family.
“I pray that God, in His infinite mercy, will grant you and the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and grant the departed eternal rest.” (TheCable)
