Global human rights watchdog, the Amnesty International, (AI) has called on the federal government to focus on ending the protracted violence and atrocious killings in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna state where 13 persons were allegedly killed at Layindanauta Kuyello District.
Taking a swipe at the police over the horrific bandits’ attack on the community, the AI, in a statement issued on Saturday, said that its findings showed that the gunmen, who stormed the area, went on the rampage of atrocities, killing people, destroying properties, and looting shops.
According to AI, “The pattern of the latest attack shows all the atrocious hallmarks of the consistent years of attack on the people of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.
“Alarming escalation of attacks, abductions for ransom, and frequent killings around parts of Birnin Gwari LGA have left people feeling more unsafe.
“Incessant killings and the stunning failure of the authorities to end them and bring suspected perpetrators to justice have been and continue to be a threat to the right to life in Nigeria.
“The Nigerian authorities must focus effectively on ending the violence in Birin Gwari and other places, as well as bringing the actual suspected perpetrators to justice.”
An online publication, SaharaReporters, had reported that the death toll of locals in the attack had risen to 13, stating that the figure was up from the initial count of nine, and later 10 following the death of three hitherto critically injured persons.
The thirteenth victim, according to the report, was the wife of a police officer, who was shot in their Kuyello home during the attack on Thursday and later died from her injuries in Zaria.
