The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike says he is not favourably disposed to the probe of the former Sole Administrator of Rivers State, retired Air Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas who exited office on Thursday, September 18, 2025, following the expiration of the six months state of emergency in the state.
The immediate past governor of the state however stated that the state House of Assembly and the reinstated Governor Siminalayi Fubara were free to probe Ibas’ six months tenure if they felt there was need for it.
Newsmata.com.ng (NM) reports that at its first day of plenary on Thursday following the lifting of the emergency rule in the state on Wednesday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the House of Assembly resolved to probe the administration of the finances of the oil-rich state under the sole administrator.
One of the motions adopted was the need to “Ascertain what transpired in the last six months with regards to award or contracts and expenditures from the consolidated revenue fund on the state”.
The lawmakers said, “We never sighted the budget by the National Assembly but only read it on the pages of Newspapers. We don’t know what it contained. No member of the House is against the motions; there is need to ascertain what came into Rivers State and expenditure by the Administrator,”
But fielding questions on Channels Television programme, Politics Today on Thursday night, the former Rivers State governor who commended the president for intervening in the protracted political crisis in the state by imposing emergency rule, said when asked if he would support an audit of the tenure of the sole administrator, that “I don’t want to take the role of people. The Legislature has oversight function.The governor has his own function. If you ask me, as an individual, I like to move ahead”.
Pressed further, Wike, who during his tenure probed his predecessor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, said, “The word giving account, if you ask me that now, it will look like oh, he said the man should go there and not talk about how much he spent. That’s not what I’m talking about.
“If there is the need, the Assembly thinks that they want to look into it, there’s no problem. If there is the need that the governor thinks that things are not clear, he has a duty. But I’m not going to sit here to say look, I want the governor, go and probe this, the assembly, go and probe this, I won’t do that”.
