More details have emerged on the circumstances that led to the tragic death of one Pius Etim, a driver, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Thursday following a heavy rainfall.

A communication mast was said to have fallen on the middle aged man who had driven his boss to the stadium, venue of a praise night to mark the first 100 days in office of Governor Monday Okpebholo, to decorate it, crushing his head beyond recognition.

According to eyewitnesses, the mast had fallen on the man as a result of a violent wind that preceded the heavy rainfall which aborted the planned programme.

The deceased driver to the venue decorator was said to have been killed by the collapsed mast when he frantically attempted to salvage his boss’ decoration materials.

A police officer at the scene of the incident who pleaded anonymity, said, “We were all gathered at the stadium waiting for the commencement of the praise night when the breeze began. “Unfortunately, the mast fell and killed the man instantly. His head was shattered and it was a gory sight.”

I gathered that he was a driver to the person who was at the stadium to decorate the venue. Most people had to leave the stadium after the rain subsided.”

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, could not be reached for confirmation as he did not take several calls to his line.
