The assurance by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the Adesuwa Police Division, Benin City, Edo State, Oluku Othuke, and the presence of Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom and proprietor of the Igbinedion Education Centre, (IEC) Benin, which had been in the news since early Friday March 13, 2026, over a case of bullying, prevented what could have resulted in a breakdown of law and order at the school premises as agitated parents thronged the school in solidarity with the victim identified as Israel, a senior secondary school 2 (SSS2) student.
Newsmata.com.ng reports that the brutal assault on Israel, said to have lost his father recently and his mother reportedly ill, was captured in a viral video which started to trend early on Friday on social media, and showing a student flogging him severely with a belt, and another taking over, mercilessly dealing blows and kicks on the helpless student and matching his ribs with his shoes.
The two bullies, both senior secondary school 3 (SSS3) students, identified as Choice Osarumen Asoro, and Dino Uyi, have been expelled alongside one Michael who was recording the assault.
While Timothy Asoro, Choice’s father is said to be a hotelier and owner of Asotime Events Centre, Uyi’s father is said to be a senior manager at First Bank Plc.
Addressing the angry parents, the DPO succeeded in assuaging their feelings when in introducing himself, he claimed to also be a parent, and assured them that justice would be served in the matter.
Appealing for calm, the DPO, under whose jurisdiction the IEC is, said “My name is CSP (chief superintendent of police) Oluku Othuke. I am the DPO Adesuwa Division. As a matter of fact, I am a parent here too. So, I understand the pain. If there is anybody that is more concerned, I think I should be, being a parent and being an investigator on this matter.
“Be rest assured that justice will be served. They have taken their decision. I don’t want any situation where we parents begin to escalate it beyond proportion.
“The decisions taken are in favour of parents. So, let us be patient. Just remain calm. The proprietor herself will come up. It is not in my position to brief you, otherwise I will have made the pronunciation. But allow the parents to come up, the proprietor will come up and address you people. But in the time being, let’s remain calm”.
Tempers had flared as the parents sighted Asoro’s father coming with some policemen and they thought he had also come to harass them for calling for justice. As father and son headed towards their car, they were booed by the parents and some students around.
The visibly remorseful fair-skinned Asoro was seen walking away and looking back at the jeering parents and students with clasped hands raised in a seeming apology.
This did not deter them as they continued to rain invectives on both father and son. They could be heard shouting “see papa, see papa. Shame on you, shame on you. born trowey pickin; as you fine reach, useless child, bastard child”.
Meanwhile, on sighting the nonagenarian Chief Igbinedion, the parents were elated as they shouted, “Ehwo o, ehwo o, see our daddy. Chei chei”, then followed the chant of “Daddy dede oyoyo”, “Na our papa be dis o, eh, we nor get another one, na our papa be dis o, eh”.
The Esama was said to have addressed and pacified the angry parents and assured them that measures had been put in place to prevent further occurrences in the school.
