In a decision political observers see as coming late in the day, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has wielded the big stick on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Wike, former governor of Rivers State, was expelled from the PDP at the party’s ongoing controversial national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State along with Ayodele Fayose, former governor, Kamaldeen Ajibade, senior advocate of Nigeria, (SAN) Austin Nwachukwu, and former secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
But Wike fired back, mocking those who expelled him as “intoxicated”.
The motion for their expulsion was moved by Chief Olabode George, former National Vice Chairman of the party, (South) while Samaila Burga, Chairman of the PDP in Bauchi State seconded the motion.
Newsmata.com.ng reports that the PDP convention is holding amid conflicting court judgements and further factionalisation of the party, with the faction loyal to Wike boycotting the convention.
Though the faction had gotten a court judgement stopping the convention, the party however got a counter judgement giving it the nod to proceed with the exercise.
At an emergency meeting of the faction in Abuja on Thursday, Ohuabunwa, chairman of its Board of Trustees, taunted the PDP, stating that any member heading to Ibadan is attending “a jamboree”.
Insisting that the Federal High Court judgement barring the convention remained binding, Senator Ohuabunwa said, “We have met as the national working committee of PDP and reviewed our activities. We have agreed to obey all the court decisions on the Ibadan convention. So, we are not part of the exercise.
“Ibadan is a public place. People can go for anything but not for convention. Anyone going there in the name of convention should consider it a jamboree.
“We won’t tolerate flagrant abuse of the constitution by some individuals in the name of a convention”.
The faction’s acting national chairman, Abdulrahman Muhammad, also called on the delegates to stay away from the convention and wait for the right time.
Announcing the disciplinary action in an official statement released by @OfficialPDPNig across its social media handles, the PDP wrote: “In a landmark move to restore unity, discipline, and focus ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its ongoing 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, has expelled high-profile members Nyesom Wike, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), former Governor Ayo Fayose, Austin Nwachukwu, and several others.
“The decision, which was promptly ratified by an overwhelming majority of delegates, underscores the party’s commitment to eradicating internal divisions and anti-party conduct that have plagued its progress.”
First to react in a jibe was Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Wike, Lere Olayinka who wrote on his social media handle X “They went to Ibadan to start dirty December in November. When people decided to start their own dirty December in November, one can’t but ignore whatever comes out of their mouths.
“They gathered in Ibadan to do social party, enjoyed themselves and got intoxicated, they are free to say anything.”
