
The human body is a complex system, and sleep is one of its most critical maintenance processes. Yet despite spending roughly a third of our lives asleep, most people have a surprisingly incomplete understanding of what happens during those hours and what their bodies actually need. A physician recently stepped forward with five biological truths about sleep — and the first one changes how we should think about rest for half the population: women need more sleep than men.
The physician attributes this difference — approximately 20 additional minutes per night for women — to the demands of cognitive multitasking. When the brain simultaneously manages multiple tasks, responsibilities, and streams of thought throughout the day, it engages its executive processing systems at a significantly higher level than sequential, single-task thinking requires. For many women, this intensive cognitive mode is the daily norm. Sleep is when the brain recovers from that effort, and more effort means more recovery time needed.
Beyond gender differences, the physician highlights another important but overlooked fact: sleep onset time tells you a great deal about your sleep health. Falling asleep should take between 10 and 20 minutes. This window reflects a healthy balance between tiredness and the ability to relax. If you consistently fall asleep in under five minutes, your body may be dangerously depleted. If it regularly takes 30 minutes or more, your nervous system may be struggling to disengage from the waking state.
Dreams, despite their vivid and emotionally resonant nature, are almost entirely forgotten. Research indicates that approximately 95 percent of dream content disappears within minutes of waking, because dreams occur in sleep stages that don’t prioritize long-term memory encoding. Writing dreams down immediately upon waking — before checking your phone, before getting up, before any other stimulus takes over — is the most reliable method of preserving what remains.
Two final biological truths complete the picture. After 17 consecutive hours of wakefulness, the brain’s performance drops to a level comparable to mild intoxication — a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05 percent — with genuine implications for safety and functioning. Andwith melatonin, biology favors restraint: 0.5 mg mirrors the brain’s own natural secretion and tends to support sleep more effectively than the much higher doses that are commonly available and frequently overused.
