Dmitry Medvedev says his country needs to launch ‘preventative’ measures on the United States and its western allies
Russia’s ex-president Dmitry Medvedev has called on Vladimir Putin to consider pre-emptive strikes against the US and its allies in response to Donald Trump’s ‘theatrical’ 50-day ceasefire demand.
In a conversation with state-run TASS, Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, claimed the West is engaging in full-scale warfare against Russia. “We need to act accordingly. Respond in full. And if necessary, launch preventative strikes,” he insisted, as reported by the agency.
This bold statement comes shortly after the US President issued a 50-day ultimatum for Russia to halt its conflict with Ukraine, following escalated drone and missile attacks on the Eastern European nation. It comes amid major health fears for Donald Trump as photos showed his severely swollen ankles crammed into his shoes.
During a visit from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump announced he had greenlit the production and distribution of “top of the line weapons” to the alliance to bolster Ukraine, warning of “severe tariffs” on Russia should they ignore the ceasefire directive.
“My conversations with him [Putin] are always very pleasant… and then the missiles go off at night,” Trump remarked to reporters post-meeting, reports the Express US.
Trump has put forth the threat of imposing tariffs “at about 100 percent” on Russia, along with possible “secondary tariffs” targeting nations that engage in trade with Moscow, aiming to deter them from maintaining economic ties.
Russian reactions to Trump’s 50-day ultimatum have sparked fierce debate, with former president Medvedev dismissing America’s demands outright.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday (July 15), he declared: “Trump issued a theatrical ultimatum to the Kremlin. The world shuddered, expecting the consequences. Belligerent Europe was disappointed. Russia didn’t care.”

“President Donald Trump’s ultimatum to Russia to accept a peace deal in Ukraine within 50 days or face bruising sanctions has given the Kremlin extra time to pursue its summer offensive,” The Associated Press reported.
Critics have also highlighted Trump’s fury over Israel’s decision to “drop a load of bombs, the likes of which I’ve never seen,” targeting Iran just after he had successfully negotiated a ceasefire between the feuding Middle Eastern powers following their brutal 12-day war that began when Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu launched pre-emptive attack………………
Defense specialists have voiced similar worries, with former British Army colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon warning that Russia “may think they can finish off Ukraine quickly with tactical nukes, and we would not react.”
Medvedev pushed back against such speculation, telling TASS: “Let me remind you that our president has unequivocally stated that Russia has no intention of fighting NATO or ‘attacking Europe.'”.
