A Kentucky man has been arrested after allegedly living with his wife’s dead body for at least a week.
Tyler Hern has been charged with abuse of a corpse following the discovery of Laura Hern’s remains at their home in Highland Heights. Police said they were called to the address on Grey Stable Lane on Monday, where they found the 37-year-old woman’s body on one of the beds.
It’s believed Laura had been dead for between one week and ten days. Tyler, who had lived at the same address as Laura, was detained following the shocking discovery. Investigations later revealed that he had allegedly been using his wife’s phone to contact her family in an attempt to ‘keep her death a secret’.
A police report obtained by Fox19 Now stated: “Through investigation, Hern admitted to utilizing his wife’s phone to text family members when they were checking on her well-being in an attempt to conceal her death.” The manner in which Laura died is still under inquiry. But Tyler is being held in the Campbell County Detention Center, with his bond set at $500,000.
The incident comes as two parents have been accused of murdering their daughter nearly five years ago after her body was found in a trash bag on their property. Crystina Schroer, 50, and Joseph Schroer, 53, are also facing child abuse and kidnapping charges in connection with six-year-old Kennedy Schroer’s tragic death. Her remains were found in the couple’s backyard five months ago.
The investigation began on September 10, when police responded to a call about a resident threatening self-harm with a gun at a home in Rose Hill, about 20 miles southeast of Wichita. However, upon arrival, officers found no firearm, and the individual was taken to a local hospital. It was during this encounter that police uncovered information about a past homicide.
The next day, authorities discovered “the possibility of human remains” buried in the backyard, prompting a thorough search of the property. To aid in the search, police utilized a “brush hog” to clear overgrown vegetation and deployed cadaver dogs, although initially, no evidence was found. Police then started searching an additional site and it was there that authorities say they had discovered Kennedy’s body inside a garbage bag.
According to Rose Hill Police Chief, Taylor Parlier, authorities believe the couple is solely responsible for the crime, stating, “At this time, we have no evidence that there should be anybody else that’s going to be charged,” as reported by KAKE.
A coroner subsequently confirmed that the young girl, born Natalie Garcia, succumbed to “probable suffocation, and her manner of death was homicide,” as stated in the press release. Kennedy, who was adopted by the couple back in 2019, is thought to have passed away in late 2020, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.
