“I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; that I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability,
faithfully, and in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

This was history being made on Monday as former deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda took her oath of office as the first female Speaker of the House.

Her swearing-in followed the unanimous impeachment of the former speaker, Mudashiru Obasa at plenary. Obasa, 52, had occupied the position since June 8, 2015. He was accused of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
